Tagging & Meta Keywords
4. Tagging
Tagging is a relatively new feature on the net and is commonly touted as one of the must-have web 2.0 features. Although Wordpress does not have native tagging support, we can implement this by using a plugin called Ultimate Tag Warrior:
The Ultimate Tag Warrior (UTW) is designed for WordPress sites to increase the possibilities and functions for tagging posts and expanding site navigation through the creation of lists of tags. It allows storing a set of keywords (current slang calls these "tags") against posts that behave like categories - the tags can be displayed on a post as links, and when clicked, the visitor is taken to an archive page for that tag.
Currently, it is not immediately obvious that tagging is useful for SEO purposes but seeing that it is becoming very popular with web 2.0 sites like Del.icio.us, Flickr, GMail and Technorati, this has the potential to be included as one of the ways to "score" a website by search engines. However, we can use tagging in another way by showing as meta keywords and this can be done with another plugin called Tags in the Head.
How to use it?
1. Download & Install Ultimate Tag Warrior - Link
2. Download & Install Tags in the Head - Link
3. Activate both plugins and goto Options -> Tags in the Head
4. Select UTW as the plugin and proceed to fill in the information for these fields: Homepage keywords, Archive Keywords, META description and any other fields that you want.
5. Start blogging and remember to insert tags into your posts and you're pretty much done.
There are few ways of utilising UTW in your blog, but as you can see on this blog, I've only implemented 2 of them & I'll show you how I did it:
1. Show Tags under Heading (only when a single post is displayed)
This will require some editing to the "Single Post" template, under your h1 headline, insert this code:
And in your stylesheet, add this code:
padding: 10px 5px 0px;
font-size: 80%; font-variant:small-caps;}
2. Related Posts
Again in the "Single Post" template, above the code for the comments template, add this:
5 is the number of posts it will display, you can increase/decrease it if you want.
And in your stylesheet:

[…] I've previously wrote on using tags as meta keywords in Wordpress but are meta tags useful at all? Many SEO experts believe that Google no longer takes meta tags into consideration considering its widespread abuse but the point in contention here is if adding meta tags to your site will actually hurt your rankings? Well, Jennifer Sullivan Cassidy of First Class SEO conducted an experiment on 6 websites to monitor if meta tags will cause harm to the rankings but the answer currently seems to be inconclusive: Q: “How much of a difference does eliminating the meta tag information truly make?” […]

Hi, this is great easy to use SEO info. I had one problem though. When adding tagging keywords, I wasn't exactly sure which file to edit and add this code to "". I wanted to set mine up like you have it with the tags under the post title.
thanks

The Ultimate Tag Warrior 3 site seems to be offline (account suspended). Anyone got a link to a mirror?

I added a tagging plug-in called SimpleTags it seems easy to use. Are there SEO advantages in the "tags in the head" that I may be missing out on ?
